The Revolutionary War started 250 years ago
That's just one of the amazing anniversaries we are celebrating in 2025. Read on to be the smartest person in the room -- or the Zoom!
Now that we’re into the new year, let’s take a moment to note some of the more interesting anniversaries in 2025, dates and events you can share with your friends to show them how smart you are.
For starters, this year marks the 250th anniversary of the start of the Revolutionary War. (And if you’re thinking the date was July 4, 1776, well, no, the war was already underway when Thomas Jefferson penned the Declaration of Independence.)
Key moments in the first year of the War for Independence:
In February 1775, the British parliament declared Massachusetts to be in a state of rebellion.
The next month, Patrick Henry uttered, “Give me liberty or give me death.”
Then in April, Paul Revere made his storied midnight ride from Boston to Lexington to warn, “The British are coming.”
In June, the Continental Congress named George Washington commander in-chief of the Continental Army.
The war was on.
I have more on that in my latest Essential News column. Also a look at other memorable events whose anniversaries we note this year including the discovery that we are not alone in space, the launch of the Peanuts comic strip, and the debut of the Rocky Horror Picture Show.
