Women's History Month is right around the corner -- and more
The latest Essential News update from my column in Florida Weekly is now ready for your reading pleasure.
The month of March is right around the corner. It’s National Reading Month (and I’ll have more on that in my March 1 newsletter), Dolphin Awareness Month, National Optimism Month, Mad for Plaid Month and, importantly, Women’s History Month.
In my Florida Weekly column, I have a neat trivia quiz about women’s history that I’ll share here along with a few more items. You get this sneak peak at the column because you subscribe to my Substack channel. Thank you very much.
Women’s History Month celebrates the contributions women have made to American culture, history and society.
The theme for this year’s celebration is “Moving Forward Together! Women Educating and Inspiring Generations.” Educational programs centered around this theme will focus on the role women have played “in shaping society, and the goals of honoring, inspiring, educating and uniting communities.”
Here are a few trivia questions you can share to prove how attuned you are to this:
Who co-founded and presided over the National Woman Suffrage Association?
Susan B. Anthony
Who was the first woman to win the Nobel Prize, and the first person to win two Nobel prizes?
Marie Curie
Who was the first Black woman in Congress?
Shirley Chisholm
Who was the first woman to rise to EGOT status (meaning winning an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony award)?
Helen Hayes
Who was the first female U.S. secretary of state?
Madeleine Albright
Who was the first American woman in space?
Sally Ride
